Messy play, a dynamic and tactile learning experience, is a cornerstone of childhood development, offering a unique approach to fostering crucial skills in young minds. At Spring Forward, our Messy Monsters program highlights the importance of sensory exposure and messy play as invaluable tools for nurturing a child’s growth. Engaging in messy play sparks not only curiosity and imagination but also enhances communication skills and concentration. It is a multisensory journey, allowing children to explore and learn through touch, sight, and sometimes even taste.
Designed for children aged 2 and up, Messy Monsters supports cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skill development, and promotes social interaction. By offering specialised groups for 'sensory seekers' and 'sensory avoiders,' we ensure a comfortable and conducive environment for every child to flourish. Whether it’s squishing, pouring, or painting, messy play in our program is more than just fun; it's a scientifically backed method for developing independence and fostering physical and language development. Join us at Messy Monsters, where learning and growth happen in the most joyously untidy way!
Sensory avoidance, a term often associated with individuals who are hypersensitive to sensory stimuli, plays a significant role in the lives of many. It is often associated with sensory processing disorders or autism, however this sensitivity is also present in the general population. It's characterised by a tendency to become overwhelmed, distressed by, or avoidant of sensory inputs that others might find normal or even pleasant. Sound familiar?
This heightened sensitivity can make everyday environments, like a crowded room or a noisy street, challenging and anxiety-inducing. Without appropriate support and strategies, sensory avoidance can lead to increased stress and anxiety, impacting daily functioning and quality of life. Recognising and addressing sensory avoidance is crucial, as prolonged stress and anxiety can have long-term implications, potentially affecting mental health, social interactions, and overall well-being.
At Spring Forward, our Messy Monsters program is designed to gently introduce varied sensory experiences, helping children navigate and overcome their sensitivities in a supportive and nurturing environment.
Sensory seeking behaviour is often observed in individuals who crave more sensory stimulation than the average person, leading them to seek out experiences that provide intense sensory input. This behaviour is commonly seen in children with sensory processing disorders, autism or ADHD, however it is not limited to these community groups. Sensory seekers might enjoy loud noises, bright lights, or seek tactile experiences like touching different textures.
While sensory seeking can satisfy their need for stimulation, it can pose challenges in daily life, particularly in environments where such intense sensory experiences are not always appropriate or available. Without proper guidance, this constant quest for sensory input can lead to difficulties in maintaining attention, self-regulation, and body awareness. It may also interfere with learning and social interactions.
At Spring Forward, our Messy Monsters program is designed to provide a safe and structured environment where sensory seekers can explore and engage with a variety of sensory experiences. This helps in fostering better attention, self-awareness, and appropriate sensory processing, preparing them for a balanced and fulfilling life.
